We have been driving animals to extinction ever since we first appeared, haven’t we? When we learned that we could more efficiently kill a horde of mammoths by driving them off a cliff than by killing just one of them at a time, we began to strain our relationship to the natural world. The thought that we ever had a peaceful relationship with the Earth is soothing but not very true. To see life on this planet flourish, what it really needs is our absence.
